Viewpoint

The traditional role of the CIO as we know it is becoming obsolete, thanks to the advent of new cutting edge technologies that have the capability of transforming business processes and creating new products and services that were not even thought of a few years ago. Hence the CIO of today must shift his focus from defending the old baseline and instead embrace new innovative capabilities – become the Chief Innovation Officer.

Credentials

Nikunj Jhaveri founded Systems Plus in 1987. The company specializes in IT services such as Strategic IT Consulting, Business Process Re-engineering, Custom Software Development and ERP Implementation. For over 25 years, Nikunj has guided Systems Plus through its growth and is currently responsible for formulating business strategy and building / acquiring new business for the company. Systems Plus has clients in 20+ countries and is serviced by offices in India, US and UK.

From 1998 – 2001, Nikunj also successfully served as the CIO for PepsiCo Asia Pacific (in an outsourced capacity) while running Systems Plus. This unique experience is what differentiates him from others, as he truly can think from both the client side as well as the vendor side simultaneously.

Today, Nikunj continues to leverage this knowledge as he spends much of his time assisting firms from US/ Europe in formulating and executing their IT outsourcing strategy and helping them assess their ability to either build or move to an offshore development center. Some of his current clients include PepsiCo International, Brooks Brothers, VeloCloud, Restoration Hardware, and Payless Shoes

Nikunj holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay.

Community Involvement

Systems Plus distributes a good amount of its profits to various charities. To ensure that the money is being well spent, Nikunj serves on several boards, including:

  • Pride India– the rural arm of Save the Children,
  • VOICE– an shelter for the girl child,
  • Chirag Rural Foundation– youth of India lighting up India
  • We Can– educational outreach for the children living by the railway platforms are some of the ones I am active in.

Systems Plus also has the CSR initiative “UDAAN” which helps in the field of education and supports other causes as well. The Mumbai office is associated with the NGO Aseema and the Pune location with the NGO Idea.

The latest addition to the social cause, which is very close to Nikunj’s heart, is Xperience Powerhouse, a social enterprise which provides a platform for retired professionals to utilize their experience through services to corporate clients. This keeps them engaged post-retirement and also gives them feelings of inclusion with utilization. This program addresses some of the problems arising post retirement like feeling of loneliness, being unwanted, and low self-esteem.

memorable battles

2012 Collective Brands
I was asked by the CIO to identify a tier 3 outsourcing player in India who would be nimble and cost effective. To our surprise, the rates for tier 3 were very similar to tier 1’s, which led to setting up a captive in India. Despite the legal and regulatory challegnes, we created the innovative concept of a “managed captive”– finding the lowest threshold of cost and maximum transparency.
2001 PepsiCo Europe
I was challenged by the CIO to transform a legacy Go to Market system for Iberia and the Netherlands, which had no technical documentation, at a price half the quote from their existing provider. We took the risk and found retired professors who understood Cobol to help reverse engineer the system. Today after 15 years, the system is still running in Iberia, Netherlands and Greece.
